Number Of Chromosomes

Edouard (Joseph Louis-Marie) van Beneden was a Belgian embryologist and cytologist and son of a prominent parasitologist and paleontologist, Pierre-Joseph van Beneden. The elder van Beneden was best known for discovering the life cycle of the tapeworm. Following in his father’s footsteps, Edouard experimented with intestinal worms in horses and showed that sexual fertilization created a new cell with half its chromosomes from the male sperm and the other half from the female egg. He also discovered that each species has a fixed number of chromosomes. He died on this date in 1910.
