Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone Rose Hawthorne Lathrop began her adult life following in the footsteps of her famous literary father, Nathaniel Hawthorne. But for Lathrop, who was born on this date in 1851, philanthropy became her life's work. In 1896, Lathrop and her husband, George Parsons Lathrop, founded the first home for victims of incurable cancer. After George's death, Lathrop became a nun of the Dominican order and devoted her life to the welfare of the terminally ill. After cofounding a cancer hospice in lower Manhattan, Lathrop took the name Mother Alphonsa. The New York World's 1926 obituary of Mother Alphonsa noted, "Such a person understands that man does not live by bread alone, that he is cursed with an imagination which sets him reaching for things a little above the necessities of life."
