On this date in 1921, the first class of the Army School of Nursing graduated. During World War I, the group of 402 students attended classes in the three-year program at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. The school was discontinued during the Great Depression. Annie Warburton Goodrich, a champion of nursing causes, was the first head of the school. Goodrich held many other top positions in her field, including dean of the first nursing program at Yale University. In 1976, 22 years after her death, Goodrich was one of the first inductees into the American Nursing Association's Nursing Hall of Fame.
