William McDougall, psychologist and physician, was also an anthropologist. In the late 1800s, he made an expedition with Charles Hose to study headhunters in Borneo. Together they wrote "The Pagan Tribes of Borneo." His major research, however, was in psychology. In 1908, McDougall wrote "An Introduction to Social Psychology," and in 1920, he was named a professor of psychology at Harvard. His controversial book "Is America Safe for Democracy?" in which he claimed the supremacy of the Nordic "race" on the basis of army mental tests overshadowed his later work. McDougall was born on this date in 1871 and died in 1938.
