Healing A Disabled Voice

When singers, actors and newscasters are diagnosed with a "disabled voice," they seek the help of a laryngologist, who treats disorders and diseases of the larynx. The American Laryngological Association is the only professional medical organization dedicated to the scientific study of the larynx. The Society was founded 124 years ago on this date in 1878. According to the ALA, it is estimated that several million Americans are diagnosed with disorders of the voice and larynx. Four to five times that number of people are considered to be at risk of getting a laryngeal disorder because of cigarette smoking, secondhand smoke and air pollution.
